It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of
Dale Albert Cowan on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at the age of 70 years.
Dale was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, mentor, and friend whose kindness, honesty, integrity, compassion, and quiet leadership touched countless lives. He believed deeply in people, encouraged others to reach their full potential, and lived each day with humility, generosity, and a wonderful sense of humour that brought smiles to family, friends, colleagues, and students alike.
Born on April 7, 1956, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Dale was raised in the community he proudly called home throughout his life. He attended school in Medicine Hat and graduated from Crescent Heights High School before earning his Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. He later completed his Master of Education at the University of Calgary, preparing for a career devoted to education.
Education was not simply Dale’s profession—it was his calling. He dedicated 35 years to the Medicine Hat Public School District #76 as an elementary school teacher and later as an administrator.
Throughout his career, he believed deeply in the potential of every child and led with kindness, honesty, integrity, and compassion. He was a mentor to colleagues, an advocate for students, and a respected leader whose influence extended far beyond the classroom walls.
In 1962, Dale was a member of the very first Grade 1 class at the newly opened Webster Niblock School. More than half a century later, in 2014, he retired as Vice Principal of that very same school where his educational journey had begun. In a poignant coincidence, Webster Niblock School, where Dale’s journey in education began, also closes its doors in 2026, marking the end of a chapter deeply connected to his life story.
Above all else, Dale’s greatest joy was his family. He shared nearly 40 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife and best friend, Melisa, building a life rooted in love, laughter, and trust. They shared a strong bond built on complete trust, quiet understanding, and unwavering support. Together they faced life’s joys and challenges side by side. Melisa knew that no matter the circumstance, Dale was always in her corner—steadfast, dependable, and ready to help, no questions asked. 
To his family, Dale was a quiet source of strength, steady encouragement, and unconditional love. He celebrated every milestone, offered unwavering support through every challenge, and found his greatest pride and happiness in watching his children and grandchildren grow. Whether they needed advice, a helping hand, or simply someone to listen, Dale was always there. His love was constant, generous, and deeply felt. His quick wit and wonderful sense of humour brought light and laughter into everyday moments, creating memories his family will forever cherish.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Melisa Cowan; his daughters, Jerredi Hauck (Josh) and their daughters, Iveryn and Eraley; Teigen Dobbin (Blain) and their sons, Aysin, Enytt, and Orin; and his son, Grayden Cowan (Katelynn Saufert). He is also lovingly remembered by his mother-in-law, Dori Spackman; his brothers, Glenn Cowan and Roger Cowan (Cathy); his brother-in-law, Devin Spackman (Shelley); along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, former students, colleagues, dear friends, and his faithful companion, Brier, who was never far from his side.
Dale was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Florence Cowan; his infant brother, Ralph Junior; his father-in-law, Mel Spackman; and his sisters-in-law, Delani Kela, Shanna Spackman, and Lindzi Spackman.
Outside of his career, Dale found happiness on the golf course, around a campground, and in the simple moments spent with those he loved most. Whether cheering on his children and grandchildren and celebrating their achievements, sharing stories around the campfire, enjoying a quiet walk with Melisa and Brier, or gathering around the table with family, those moments were the ones he treasured most.
Dale was an avid hockey fan and proud season ticket holder of the Medicine Hat Tigers. He loved the energy of the rink and the excitement of the game. One of his greatest joys was watching his son play hockey and seeing his grandsons begin to learn and love the sport themselves, continuing a tradition he cherished deeply.
Dale also enjoyed his role as a silent partner in LimeLitez Dance Academy, where he took great pride in his daughters’ and granddaughters’ achievements in dance. He was known for his warm presence and friendly nature, and he welcomed many families into the studio, making people feel at ease and at home simply through his kindness.
Dale measured success not by personal accomplishments, but by the lives he helped shape. His greatest legacy is found in his family, his students, and the countless people he encouraged to believe in themselves.
In accordance with Dale’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.
Many people have asked how they can honour his memory. In lieu of flowers, food, or other gifts, the family is establishing the Dale Cowan Memorial Scholarship Fund to support students pursuing further education. Dale believed deeply in helping young people reach their potential, and it is fitting that his legacy will continue by creating opportunities for future generations. Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, messages, and support we have received during this incredibly difficult time.
