Douglas Owen Booth Obituary

Douglas Owen Booth of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the age of 89 years.

Doug was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 28, 1935, to Duncan and Winnie Booth, a new sibling to George and June.

Shortly after the passing of his father in 1936, the family moved to Medicine Hat where Doug enjoyed a life of sneaking away when his mother was distracted and being a free range child in the 1940s.  Raised in the Flats, he had many adventures exploring the Seven Persons Creek, the prairie, and the stock yards that were at the bottom of Carry Drive (Scholten Hill).  Doug developed a strong attachment to all creatures, great and small, but his real passion was for horses and ponies. As a young teenager, he purchased his first horse which was boarded in Dunmore, meaning he had to walk to Dunmore and back if he wanted to ride.  On occasion he would picket the horse in Medicine Hat so that he didn't have to make the long walk.

As an adult, he moved to Dunmore and raised ponies.  Doug was employed by Black's Wholesale for many years until the business closed.  He moved to Peers, Alberta to farm near his sister June for several years before returning to the Hat.  Doug had always been an uncle who doted on his niece and nephews and it was during his time in Peers that Doug taught them how to ride horses.  Doug was a beloved uncle who enjoyed spending time with them and who was always there for them.  Doug meant a lot to each of them.  Doug eventually moved to a small farm yard south of the Hat off of the Black & White Trail.  He worked at the front counter of several businesses, before retiring due to failing health. He continued to raise ponies, and all manner of critters such as cats, dogs, pheasants, hogs (both domestic and wild), chickens, geese, and rabbits. Conversations with Doug were always mixed with humor and stories of his many adventures and misadventures as he had a wonderful memory for details and storytelling.  His final move was to the Flats, where he enjoyed meeting friends for coffee in Strathcona Island Park. On September 4, Doug passed away while at home.

He is survived by his brother, George and sister-in-law, Irma of Winnipeg; his niece, Debbie (Hadler) Hall and his nephews, Darcy Hadler and Denton Hadler.

He was predeceased by his sister, June Hadler; his brother-in-law, Dirk Hadler and his nephew Darwin, who passed away 19 days after Doug.

Interment has taken place in the Hillside Cemetery.
