Douglas Ellis McDowell Obituary

Douglas Ellis McDowell, beloved husband of the late Betty McDowell, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the age of 88 years.

Doug was born on June 20, 1937, in Tompkins, Saskatchewan. He farmed alongside his father on the family farm before moving to Maple Creek and later to Medicine Hat. Doug married Betty Newson in July 1959, and the couple settled in Maple Creek, where Doug worked as a truck driver at Motorways and Betty taught at Jasper Street School. They later moved to Medicine Hat, where Doug began working for McMillan Transport, a career he would continue for forty four years. They enjoyed serving in the church, travelling together, camping, and going to Tiger hockey games.
After retirement, Doug devoted himself to philanthropic endeavors, including the Hillcrest Church furniture program, where he helped deliver furniture to families in need. He found great joy in helping others and staying connected within his community. Doug exemplified Jesus' command to "love your neighbor as yourself," a value clearly reflected in the deep affection his neighbors held for him and the support they offered in his later years.

In the past five years, Doug was blessed to know and love Darlene Rath, sharing many wonderful times together. Doug went to be with his Lord in the early morning of Thursday, January 22, at Saint Joseph's in Medicine Hat.

Doug was a proud father to Blair and Mark (Jillian), and a loving grandfather to Finley, Max, Emery, and Madden. He is also survived by his sister Janice Garratt and her husband Gerald of Edmonton; his brother Grant and wife Donna of Cranbrook; sister-in-law Carol and Richard of Picton, Ontario; and Shirley Hucul of Phoenix, Arizona, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty McDowell; his parents, Ellis and Mildred McDowell and his parents-in-law, Gordon and Freela Newson;  his sister, Mavis; his two brothers-in-law, Dave Hill of Calgary and Sandy Hucul of Phoenix and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Stevenson.

The funeral service  will be held in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jamie McDonald officiating.   The service will be live streamed.  Those who wish to attend virtually, please use the following link, or click on the button below:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZSGY22N4jY
