Evelyn Doris Schlachter Obituary

EVELYN DORIS SCHLACHTER of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late James (Jim) Schlachter, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital surrounded by family on Monday May 20, 2024, at the age of 90 years.

Evelyn is survived by her loving family; Sons: Rodney (Linda), Daniel (Janet), Blair (Susan) and Shannon; Grandchildren: James, Lindsey (Kevin), Christopher, Megan (Justin), Kimberly (Derek), Katie, Cody (Amanda) and Carlena (Aaron); as well as eleven great grandchildren. Evelyn is also survived by her Sisters-in-law: Marianne Renyk, Angelina Schlachter, Lenora (Richard) Flynn, Marlene (Ronald) MacDonald and one Brother-in-law: Wayne Schlachter; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great friends.

Evelyn was born the youngest of six children on July 3, 1933 on the family farm to Jesse and Eva Preskey. Her heart found a match in Jim Schlachter and they were married on May 3, 1956. Together they raised five children and purchased a farm in the Conquerville area. Jim and Evelyn were kept busy by the activities of their children; volunteering and being active in the community and building their farm. Tragically, Jim and their only daughter, Carla were taken in an automobile accident in the Fall of 1979. With grit and determination, Evelyn stayed on the farm helping her sons farm the land. In spring of 1982, Evelyn sold the farm and moved into Medicine Hat. It was here where she developed many great friendships with neighbors and others she met.

Being a Mother and Grandmother brought her the greatest of joys. Her Grandchildren treasure the many memories they have in playing board and card games with her, her delicious home cooked holiday meals and the many sleep overs and family times spent within her home.

Evelyn enjoyed her hobbies of crocheting, gardening, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She was the head of our family, truly our rock, always encouraging everyone to stick together. With her loving guidance and teachings in the value of hardwork, love of family, loyalty and friendship, she will be deeply missed.

Evelyn was predeceased by her beloved Husband, Jim, only Daughter Carla, Parents, Jesse and Eva, Siblings: Erma (Simon) Weiler, Edith (Fritz) Rossol, Charles (Anne) Preskey, Adaline (Peter) Headsworth, Alice (Ralph) Brittner.  Father and Mother-in-law: Jacob and Katherine Schlachter, Brothers-in-law: Timothy Schlachter and his wife Lenora Schlachter and Robert Renyk; nephews Bradley MacDonald, Clark Marcolin and Ken Rossol.

On behalf of the Schlachter Family, a special thank you to all of the Havenview South Country Village staff for the kindness, loving care and friendship so freely given to our Mother, and the care and compassion from the Palliative care team at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
