Irvin Ivan Duchcherer of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Leona Duchcherer, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at the age of 84 years. He lived a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and a deep devotion to his family.

Irvin was born August 25, 1941, on a farm near Maidstone, Sask., to Frank and Leya Duchcherer. He was one of six children and is survived by his brother, Roger. He was predeceased by his siblings Dorothy, Kenny, Leon, and Sharon.

Irv loved sharing stories of the family farm—stooking and threshing grain, feeding livestock, doing endless chores, and riding horses to and from school. One favourite story involved tying a rope from a horse at the top of a hill to an old car hood below. As the horse trotted around the hill, the car hood gathered remarkable speed. It was one of those ideas that made everyone wonder, “What could possibly go wrong?”

After his father’s passing, the family moved to Richmound, Sask, where they operated the local hotel, before settling in Medicine Hat. There, Irv met the love of his life, Leona Nikoleychuk. They were married on November 5, 1960, beginning a marriage that would last more than 64 wonderful years.

After a brief career as a baker in Red Deer, they returned to Medicine Hat, where Irv worked for Cablevision. Discovering a passion for electronics, they moved to Toronto so he could study at DeVry Institute. Returning to Alberta, Irv joined AGT, taking the family to Coaldale, Redcliff, Lacombe, Drumheller, and eventually back to Redcliff, where he retired after many years in telecommunications.

Retirement didn’t slow him down. He enjoyed woodworking, refinishing bathtubs, renovating houses, and restoring travel trailers. Each winter, he and Leona bought an older trailer in the U.S., lived in it while snowbirding, towed it home, restored it, sold it, and did it all again the next year.

Irv loved figuring out how things worked. One story that perfectly captured his creativity involved a boat he decided was too big, so he cut it in half to make it smaller. And no—the boat didn’t leak! Around our family, we simply called him “MacGyver.”

Irv’s greatest joy was the life he built with Leona. Together they loved to travel. Summers were filled with camping, fishing, and golf. They explored many travel destinations together, but cruising quickly became their favourite way to travel. Before long, Irv became the unofficial travel coordinator, organizing trips for family and friends.

In later years, Irv remained grateful for the gift of his borrowed heart and the 26 extra years it gave him with Leona, his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His resilience, determination, and fight for life inspired everyone who knew him.

Irv is survived by his brother, Roger (Darlene) Duchcherer; his children, Terry (Tina) Duchcherer of Hanna and Vicki (Murray) Trollope of Medicine Hat; his grandchildren, Bryce, Sara (Randy),Terra (Trevor), Trista (Mohammed), and Samantha (Nick); and ten great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.

The celebration of life will take place in the TERRACE ROOM AT CHINOOK VILLAGE on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Bob Church officiating.
