Patrick "Rick" Keith Belliveau Obituary

Born December 19, 1946, Patrick Keith Belliveau (Ricky, Ricardo, but most often Rick), who spent a lifetime defying the reaper, embarked on his final adventure in the wee hours of July 24, 2025. Described by his daughter Jessica as a "feral chaos tornado" and by his son Patrick as "just a wild man,” he left a trail of improbable close calls and perplexed medical professionals in his wake.

A Life of Almost-Exits

To truly remember Rick, we must revisit the numerous serious injuries and close curtain calls. It seems he wasn't truly happy unless he was flirting with disaster and embracing risks both big and bewildering. While we can't vouch for the chronological order, or even the complete veracity of these tales (let's not let reality ruin a good laugh), they paint a vivid picture of a man who danced with death more times than a cat with nine lives.

Here’s a likely embellished, and certainly non-exhaustive list of Rick’s greatest hits in the “gruesome injury” and "almost kicked the bucket" categories:

The Canoe Coffin

The Christmas Gift

Al Oeming’s Porcupine

The Car on the Hill with the Ice

The Colombian Coup

The Big/Bigger/Biggest Fish

The Rare Tropical Flesh Eating Disease that was Definitely not Shingles

The COVID that was Certainly not a Cold

The Christmas Light Thieves

The Snow Plow

The Price and QUALITY Avocados in Canada.

The Very Sour Gas

The BIG Earthquake

The Drier Pinch

The Long El Niño

The Mall Colapse

The Altitude Sickness

The “The Last of Us” Style Lung Infection

The Highway Avalanche(s)

The Heart Blockage (NBD)

The Pool Knee Smash

The Grinder Knee Slash

Sandal vs Bus Step vs Shin Bone

The Delirium Adventure

The Sprinkler Bonanza

The Grand Finale

After cheating death more times than Wile E. Coyote, it was, ironically, just regular old cancer that got this crazy adventurer. If you feel like making a donation in Rick's memory, he always preferred the Heart & Stroke Foundation – perhaps a subtle nod to the organ that tirelessly kept him going despite his best efforts.

The Survivors (and Confirmed Numbers)

Rick leaves behind: at least two children, Jessica and Patrick and their families; at least two ex-wives; and three siblings Neil, Sue, Tim, and their families. His circle of innumerable friends stretches around the globe, with special note for those friends from the Crowsnest Pass, Canada, including Darren, Heather, and Clayton, as well as his amigos in Huanchaco, Peru, Tor and Rosio. A special shout-out to his good friends David and Jeffery, his brother Neil and his partner Freya who travelled from afar to ensure he felt loved on his very last day.

We'd also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at various hospitals around the world for repeatedly snatching Rick from the jaws of fate. Specifically, we want to extend gratitude to the staff at the Medicine Hat and Lethbridge Hospitals for providing excellent end-of-life care, putting up with his incessant demands, and, most impressively, laughing at his terrible jokes.

While Rick's departure leaves a void, he also leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unbelievable stories. He will be sorely missed by many but never forgotten, especially when we find ourselves recounting a wild story that sounds just a little too fantastical to be true.

There are no formal memorial plans at this time, we encourage friends and family to share their stories of Rick here. If you're interested in receiving a portion of Rick's ashes, please reach out—we have a lot of them.
