Obituary

Reuben Nelson Schmidt of Medicine Hat passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Monday, August 21, 2023 at the age of 88 years.  He is survived by his siblings, Eileen Pendlebury (Allan), Harvey (Marion), Don (Barb), Bernice (Art) Lothammer, Pearl (Eric, deceased) Oram, Bev (Dwight) Younker, Jim (Kim) and Yvonne (Ray) Crowther; his sister-in-law, Meta (Alfred, deceased) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He was predeceased by his father, John - 1954; his mother, Alvina - 1976; his sisters, Inez - 1943, Betty Pillow - 2003 (Sam), Helen Semrau - 2004 (Leonard) and his brothers, Alfred - 2010 and Bob - 2015 (Peggy).  Reuben was born February 13, 1935 at Empress, Alberta and was the fourth oldest of fourteen children born to John and Alvina Schmidt. Reuben attended Sandy Point School and in 1957, moved to Medicine Hat.  After the passing of our mother, Reuben moved to the Haven of Rest doing various jobs such as kitchen helper and delivering the Medicine Hat News. Later he moved to Sunnyside Care Centre. The family extends their sincere appreciation to all the staff at the home for taking care of Reuben for the past 47 years. The family is honouring Reuben’s request to be laid to rest next to his parents at the Gnadenfeld Cemetery at Sandy Point, Alberta.  The funeral service will be held in the Wuerfel Auditorium, South Country Village, (1720 Bell Street SW) on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating.  Flowers are gratefully declined.  If you wish to remember Reuben with a donation, please forward it to the charity of your choice.
