Richard “Dick” Needham passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the age of 83 years, in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, following a lengthy illness. Richard is survived by his wife of 62 years Frances, their children Peter (Sofia) of Calgary and Catherine Oram (Blake Hull) of Medicine Hat, four grandchildren and one great grandchild as well as his brother Robert “Bob” Needham and many nieces and nephews. Richard was raised on the family ranch south of Piapot. He attended Stillwater, Piapot and Maple Creek Schools and then earned his Bachelor of Agriculture degree at the University of Saskatchewan. On December 12, 1962, he married Frances Lawrence in Saskatoon. They returned to Piapot where they built their home and farmed. Richard will be remembered by his family and friends for his generosity and quick wit. He had an unfailing work ethic and a wide range of interests; aviation, hunting, cars, motorcycles, and coached his son’s baseball team to provincial finals. Richard was a charter member of the Piapot Lion’s Club, and was a member of the Maple Creek flying Club. Together with Frances he restored the Anglican Church in Piapot.
The funeral service will be held in the MAPLE CREEK UNITED CHURCH (301 Maple Street) on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. CST with Rev. Sheila Deforest officiating.
