Samuel Maier Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Maier, beloved husband of Jean Maier (Wutzke) announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Sam, the son of John and Freda Maier, was born on the homestead farm west of Schuler, Alberta on July 18, 1931. He attended school in Schuler. In Sam’s early years, he started driving tractors and riding horses which led to a lifelong commitment to grain farming and raising cattle. Sam married Jean Wutzke on November 30,1957. Sam and Jean spent many years together on the farm working side by side. They semi-retired to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 2000. Sam stayed actively involved on the farm until his later years. Whenever one of his kids or grandkids would stop by, he would always ask how the cows were doing, how the crops were growing, or if the dugouts were full from the spring run off. Sam and Jean received a centennial homestead plaque from Cypress County and also from the province of Alberta. Sam was very proud of this achievement. Left to honor Sam’s memory is his wife, Jean of 67 years. Left to carry on his legacy are his two daughters: Sheila (Arlen) Schafer and Lois (Lyle) Albrecht. Also left to honor his memory are his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Perry (Michelle) Schafer and their children, Chet, Dawson and Nolan; Candice (Randy) Hintz and their children, Hunter and Chase; Travis Albrecht (Nancy Seitz) and their children, Kadance, Harvie and Shawn; Kristi (Royce) Neigum and their children, Kayler, Pasen, Sawyer, and Pyper. Sam is also survived by his sister Carol (Fred) Voeller, his sister-in-law Helga Maier, his brother-in-law Wallace Wutzke and his sister-in-law Shirley Vossler. Sam was predeceased by his parents John and Freda Maier and by his siblings Irene (Rudy) Hassman, Ida (Robert) Allanbrand, Isabel Maier, Emily (Alf) Ehman and Walter Maier. Sam was also predeceased by Jean’s parents Theodore and Matilda Wutzke and by her siblings Dave (Ruby)Wutzke, Irene Wutzke, Alice (Bill) Ulrich, Archie (Emma) Wutzke and Lily (Dave) Stock. Sam is also survived by and predeceased by numerous nieces and nephews. Sam had a passion for buying antiques and collectables. He could always be found at a local auction sale. He also enjoyed visiting and price dickering with many people who showed up at his many garage sales. The family would like to thank Dr. Bolstad for the great care she provided for Sam. We would also like to express our gratitude to the home care nurses who came to Sam and Jean’s house to care for them. Sam will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
