William "Bill" James Groves Obituary
William (Bill) Groves, of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the age of 90 years.
Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and is cherished by his three children: Rodney (Kara), Bonnie (Dave) Offredi of Calgary, and Gail (Wes) Hall. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren/great grandchildren: Tessa Meyers (Atreyu and Indiana), Derek (Patty) Groves (Isaac and Willa), Amy (Damian) Offredi (DJ), Travis (Jennifer) Kobly (Gannon and Levi), Tanner (Cassidy) Kobly (Wilder and the little one on the way), and Justine Layne (Beau).
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Matilda (Tillie), daughter Deborah, son-in-law Dean Kobly, and his mother, Jean. He was also predeceased by his siblings: brother Don, and sisters Mildred and Irene.
Bill was born on July 4, 1934, on the family farm in Portreeve, Saskatchewan. He and Tillie married on August 7, 1958, and farmed in the Lancer area before moving to the city. Bill later attended Medicine Hat College, where he trained as a chef. He worked in various restaurants before joining Canadian Forces Base Suffield, where he spent 18 years until his retirement.
Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially working alongside Mom in the kitchen, canning, making egg noodles, pizza pockets, salsa, and preparing hearty meals for family gatherings. His passion for gardening meant that every family home had a large, well-tended garden that he took great pride in.
He had a deep love for music and rarely missed a performance when a band came to Chinook Village. Whether it was a community event or a local show, Bill was there tapping his foot and soaking in every note.
A devoted father and grandfather, Bill was his family's biggest fan. He rarely missed a game or event and could always be found in the stands supporting his children and grandchildren right up until the time his vision no longer allowed it.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Requests are made by the family that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chinook Village Care Society or to the CNIB Foundation.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Chinook Village for taking such wonderful care of our dad and for loving him as one of your own. We are also deeply grateful to the care staff at St. Joseph’s Home for the exceptional care and kindness you gave to our dad and our family during his final days.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Bill’s life at Chinook Village (2801 13th Ave SE, entrance #10 on the northwest corner) on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Bob Church officiating.
